What creative fatigue actually is
Creative fatigue is what happens when your audience has seen an ad so many times that it stops working. Response drops, and the platform has to spend more to get the same result. It's not that the ad got worse — the audience got tired of it.
It shows up fastest in smaller audiences and on high-frequency placements, and it's a normal, recurring cost of running ads — not a one-time fix.
The signs, in order of appearance
- •Frequency climbing (average times each person has seen the ad) — the leading indicator.
- •CTR sliding as frequency rises — people are scrolling past.
- •CPM creeping up — relevance is falling, so distribution costs more.
- •CPA/cost per result rising — the bottom-line symptom, and the last to show.
By the time CPA has risen, fatigue has been building for a while — which is why frequency and CTR are worth watching first.
The refresh that actually works
The instinct is to make a slightly different version of the tired ad. That rarely helps, because the thing the audience is tired of usually survives the tweak. The better move is to identify what made the ad win — the hook, the offer, the format — keep that variable, and change everything around it.
If the winning element was a problem-first hook, write new problem-first hooks with fresh visuals. If it was the offer, present the same offer in a new format. You're refreshing the delivery, not discarding the insight.
Build a pipeline, not a panic
Because fatigue is recurring, the fix is a habit: always have the next creatives ready before the current ones fade. Watch frequency and CTR, and rotate in new executions on a schedule rather than scrambling when CPA spikes.
